***This is a Next Level Commission***
Alright! Feels good to get back to drawing Sonic and co!
My pal delivered me the perfect excuse to do just that by throwing down all his rings on a top tier commission. He wanted a bit of promotional material for a fan project called “Sonic Origins” and I’m not about to turn down work that lets me draw a few of my favorite Freedom Fighters.
So for this image, I was asked to make an advertising banner featuring the main three characters in an emblem. Not quite a tittle screen, but certainly something that would give off that kind of vibe. SWA was nice enough to feed me some asset previews of what the game will eventually look like, so I took all that info to heart and got to work.
Sonic, Sally and Nicole are three great characters to work with. Sonic’s got that timeless, ageless charm to his design, and Sally and Nicole give you all you could want in terms of flash and detail (dat hair yo). It’s especially nice when you get to work on characters you know and love, because you’re not wasting time going back and forth studying source material, or trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. You can simply put all your time and effort into making everything look great.
Let’s start with Nicole. I’ve always been fond of Sonic’s “Hi-Polygon Thread Count” joke that he made upon seeing the Lynx in a set of casuals for the first time (Issue #221 for those of you keeping score at home). As a next level commission, this was really my excuse to flex my creative muscle and make that joke into a reality. Rather than giving our Digital D.Va (lol can you tell what game I’ve been playing) the usual cloth patterns for her dress and gloves, I decided to go with something a bit more high-tech. If you zoom in close… and I mean really, really, unnecessarily close, you’ll catch a glimpse of what I am getting at. I used some cyan hue’s to kind of define the nanite/hologram nature of her clothing.
It’s a pretty slick effect if I say so myself. But the next level polish doesn’t stop there. While you’re zoomed in, why don’t you slide over to her digital aura. At first glance, it may appear to be a random collection of binary code – however those of you out there who fancy yourself coder’s might recognize a hidden message in there. It’s something else I am quite proud of, and as far as I am concerned, it is the ultimate lifeform of Easter Eggs. +1 interwebz to whoever can decode that beast.
Sally’s up next. It’s easy to get distracted by the fancy wrist blades she likes to tote around these days, but the real fun to this one was all up in her signature hairdo. I had a big task in front of me for this one. There aren’t many characters that can stand shoulder to shoulder with Nicole and not get outdone by her elegant and slick black locks. So the real task here was to bring Sally up to the god tier.
Gotta say, I think I pulled it off. I used a lot of the same tricks for Sally as I did with Nicole, and while the Red and the Black give off different effects, both end results are equally stunning. By keeping their hair trim, uniform and in bangs, they all retain that Sega charm that I was looking for.
Sonic, as always, speaks for himself. Those spines and that grin is all he needs to get his point across. It was pretty interesting working on an image like this where he did not take center stage, but the blue blur isn’t about to let his position on the sides stop him from dominating his space. His smug stance isn’t hampered in the slightest.
The emblem was based off of what you would expect out of a Sonic game. Kind of a shame so much of the ring got blocked by the characters, but that’s the price you pay I guess. The background for this piece is the “Wood Zone”. That’s stage numero uno for Sonic Origins. It’s the perfect backdrop and the perfect place to close up shop on this description.
While I’ve got this space. I want to issue out a huge thank you to my buyer for choosing BroDogz to get this sucker up and done. I’m no stranger to promotional work, so I know you had a lot of options to pick from before coming to me. The fact that you keep buying commissions from me is the biggest assurance I have that people get a kick out of my process and the end results. I appreciate the business and as always it was a pleasure working with ya.
If you’d like some more information on the “Sonic Origins” Project, then be sure to hook a hard left and swing by the link I’ll leave below. That should fastforward you over to the best spot to fill your boots with everything you need to know about the fan game, and put you in touch with the people who are running the show over there. ^^

If anyone else out there would like to hire me on for some commission work, my door is currently open. I specialize in all things Sonic the Hedgehog, but a quick look through my gallery will tell you all you need to know about what else I can work with. (here’s a hint – I can draw any character from any series). If you’d like to test out the commission waters, then follow the link to my commission price chart below and send me a note when your done with that. I’ll get back to ya faster than Sonic goes through a plate of Chili Dogs.
… well maybe not that fast... but you get the idea.
