This is an experimental piece, which was constructed as a three-fold subtraction-methodology Stream of Consciousness. (for the short and dirty, over the past few months, I attempted three different SOC pieces via subtraction methodology, none of which I was all that satisfied with. Eventually, I decided to tinker around a bit more, further jumbling them all together into a single piece).
There are a lot of disparate influences in there, most of which probably aren't worth mentioning. However, the overall theme is the unique brand of adult ennui that many members of my generation (i.e. GenX), especially the fortysomething males amongst us, are currently having to live through... The sickly realisation that you're already irrelevant without ever having been relevant in the first place... The missed opportunities and the 'should'ves that are the shits', and even having some in the younger generations tell you that somehow, you're personally to blame for just how wrong everything is in the world...
There is also some vague, musical inspiration from the Bachmann-Turner Overdrive (BTO) song "Blue Collar" (for one of the original pieces), and Yusuf Islam's (aka Cat Stevens') song: "Another Saturday Night". Specifically the idea that if the "Another Saturday Night" is "hard on a fella", what about the next day: That endless Sunday night, where depression listlessness and ennui steals your energy and drive to do anything other than mentally gnaw at yourself as the light through the window gradually grows longer?
And one final note:
No, I don't feel this is a great piece, by any stretch of the imagination, much less even one of my better ones; but I think it has some odd resonance to it that makes it worth sharing. Perhaps you, the reader will agree, or perhaps, you'll skip it and move along...
