"So this...this Koschei the Deathless..is very dangerous individual," Ivan said.
"He's a powerful necromancer," Jolly said with a grim nod, "but he also has one particular weakness if what we read is true."
Ivan's ears perked up at the word weakness. While he would have been more comfortable with Tank's help, perhaps all was not lost. "Vhat is his weakness?"
"That egg is his weakness." Jolly tapped the computer screen with a clawtip. "According to the reports his soul is hidden separate from his body inside a needle, which is in an egg. There's also some weird stuff about how it's hidden inside a duck, which is in a hare, which is in an iron chest (sometimes the chest is crystal and/or gold), which is buried under a green oak tree, which is on the island of Buyan, in the ocean." He arched an eyebrow at Ivan. "Did your father ever go to Buyan?"
"When I vas baby, poppa once mentioned trip to island, da. He vould not say vhy."
Jolly rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "Supposedly anyone possessing the egg has Koschei in their power. He begins to weaken, becomes sick and immediately loses the use of his magic. If the egg is tossed about, he likewise is flung around against his will." He shook his head. "Somehow I don't think the part where he's weakened is true if he can create monsters, but the first part..." Jolly's voice trailed off, and his eyes gained a far off look to them. He was soon lost to thought.
"Vhat about first part?" Ivan did not like being left out in these thoughts. It was his life at stake, and perhaps the life of Hopper's as well. "Please, tell me vhat you are thinking."
Jolly blinked, leaving Robey to chuckle. "Don't mind Jolly," he said, "he's got a mind that has a dozen thoughts. Each of them goes at least a mile a second."
Jolly ruffled Robey's mane. "I've only got half a dozen thoughts. I'm nowhere near as smart as you. Or as pretty."
"I'll smooch you later, handsome."
"Great." Jolly then turned to face Ivan. "Anyway. I think there's some merit to the part about being in possession of the egg puts Koschei in the owner's power. If he's so powerful, why didn't he just take the egg? You said he wanted you to give it to him, right?"
Ivan nodded. "So you think egg cannot be taken from him? That egg is still in my room?"
Jolly pointed a finger at Ivan, winking at him. "I would bet you a dinner at a casino buffet if your life weren't in danger." He looked back at the screen. "Anyway, supposedly the only way to kill him is to destroy the egg. Or maybe the needle. I'm not sure which is the right solution, so we should just destroy both."
"Do you have plan?" Ivan asked, feeling hope blossom inside his chest again.
"I just might, Ivan. I just might."
