Pooence was back at her favorite spot, doing her favorite activity for stress relief: sitting on the broken seat of a long-abandoned A-Model Piquette Truck, tossing spark plugs at old mining bottles while muttering curses under her breath.
The truck came as a remnant of some mining operation from the 1920s, when the humans thought that this portion of the Karifarna desert contained gold, the shiny stones that underwater panthers used to entertain their children, but which drove humans more crazy than any overeager underwater panther young. The humans came in their vehicles and tools and metal, and built their mines, laboring for years to dig deep into the soil. And though they found gold, it was never enough, and finally they left. And left all their crap behind. Because humans were just that lazy, thinking the World was not interconnected and also large enough to swallow their infinite shallow stupidity.
The spark plugs came from the truck, and other trucks long gone, because the desert was unforgiving, and the humans did learn that you could not rely on things running optimally, or even on average. One mistake, one failure, was all it took, and the dry lands would swallow anything without mercy. So they stocked up. And then they abandoned them with everything else.
The bottles also came from the humans. Because humans liked to drink, and when they drank it tended to be alcohol. They didn't exactly come to the deserts of Karifarna for fun. Poonence thought about keeping the bottles for storing water, or constructing stuff, but then there were thousands of bottles lying around, and in the end she figured it wasn't worth the effort.
The curses were Pooence's own.
And today they were directed at a particular long green dragon who obsessed too much about carp.
*Stupid, arrogant little green turd, sowing chaos like some flash storm-* The underwater panther fumed as she chucked another spark plug at one bottle, missing slightly.
*Someone should blow up a dam over his own perfect little pond, see how he likes it-*
Pooence picked up another spark plug and idly threw that as well. It landed, shattering the bottle and sending glass shards flying around. Poonence smirked, taking yet another plug and bounced it in her hand.
*Thinking that the world is like that garden that he could control-*
Suddenly the underwater panther sensed a familiar scent. Swift as a cat she turned with her arm raised, preparing to throw the third spark plug at Bob's head.
*What are you doing here you stupid green turd-* Pooence stopped mid-throw as she saw Bob arrive with Elder Kwahwat besides him.
*Ah Pooence, it's good to see you are always ready to give visitors a warm welcome.* The older underwater panther laughed.
*Elder Kwahwat!* Pooence let the third spark plug drop from her paw. *Why are you here with this Bob Underwater Panther-from-Beyond the Sea?*
*Well, he came seeking our help. I thought it would be nice to help him.*
Pooence was up in an instant *Why? He tried to blow up the dam and cause untold damage to everyone and everything! He's an arrogant disruptor who would sow chaos while patting himself on the back for being so correct!*
*Yes, he told me everything. So you are at the very least wrong on the last part.* Kwahwat turned to Bob *So child, tell Pooence what you told me.*
*I'msorryaboutthingsandIneedyourhelp.* Bob muttered a string of words.
*What?* Pooence frowned.
Kwahwat laughed. *Child, you'll have to do better than that! Own up to your mistakes, suffer the consequences. Don't try to flee from what you know you deserve. That is the mark of maturity.*
Bob drew a deep breath.
*I'm sorry Pooence-I'm sorry Arida Zona-for trying to blow up the dam. I did not really know what I was doing, only that I thought I was doing the right thing. I did not think about consequences for everyone else. I should have done so. I'm deeply sorry.*
*Hmph. As you should be.*
*Hush, child.* The Elder interrupted.
*I thought I was able to control the world. I let that get to my head, that I could make it as orderly and well-maintained as my pond. But I was wrong. There was a storm, it badly damaged my Xin'an Pond, killed my trees and turtles and carp.* Bob was staring at the ground. *Afterwards, I realized how uncontrollable the world was. That I can't impose my will on it. I need to adapt to it.*
Bob looked up at Poonence.
*Please, I want to help my carp, to get them upriver, to try to make them dragons. I am the Prince of Xin'an Pond, and that is my responsibility to my denizens. But I have been a bad ruler, and some have died. I need your help. Please?* Bob gave his greatest effort at puppy dog eyes.
*Hmph.* Poonence grumbled.
*I happen to believe him. * Elder Kwahwat cut in, *And I also think that you could have handled this better, blackmailing others to get your way. Did I not teach you better?*
The younger underwater panther flinched.
*You are both young, righteous, and brash. But you two are both trying to do the right thing. So you guys should work together.* the Elder continued, *Poonence, you don't need to help this green underwater panther if you don't want to, but it may teach you about responsibility and working for others. It is our way to be kind to outsiders-we were outsiders once.* The elder turned to the green dragon. *Bob, you are a nice young underwater panther who wants to do the right thing. You just need guidance on how not to do it by wiping everyone off the face of Arida Zona.* She shrugged. *I'm leaving, but hopefully you two can make Arida Zona better, instead of worse. I've seen it all.* And then Elder Kwahwat turned and leaped off a cliff, disappearing into a ravine and leaving Pooence and Bob awkwardly around each other.
*Well I guess we started off on the wrong foot. Maybe we can try this again?* Bob stuck out his paw. *I'm Bob, and I am interested in getting your help to move my carp upstream.*
Pooence stared at Bob in shock for a long minute, before she finally sighed and took that paw. *I am Pooence of Yuta, and as the Arida Zona desert is my home, I will help you in your efforts.*
Bob brightened up immediately. *Great! Thank you!* He scratched his horns. *So how do we begin?*
*I have no idea.* Pooence replied.
An awkward silence hung over the land.
Finally Poonence jumped off the A-model. *Well I have no idea, but I may know someone who could. I'll show you where he is.*
