Varan sniffed and smiled gratefully as Meredith stood up to offer her a cloth to wipe her nose and eyes. “Rērth, lir demef,” she said as she composed herself. “It . . . it felt good to cry. And better when you were here to hold me.” She finished wiping her nose and smiled up at the mare.
“I’m glad that you trust me,” Meredith said. “After all, I’m Terran.”
“That is so, but you’re a Colonial,” the vir pointed out, “not a coreworlder. And you’re my friend, Meredith.” Varan smiled. “I trust you.”
The palomino mare returned the smile and took Varan’s hands in her paws. “I’m glad, and I trust you, too.” She glanced away a moment before adding in a quieter voice, “There’s been some news that we’ve heard on Moncayo.”
“Aka?”
“Their local forces had detected Confed ships in their system.” The mare’s ears flicked as Varan’s tail thumped on the bed. “You hadn’t heard about that?” The vir gestured negatively, and Meredith sat back, her features becoming slightly more solemn as she recalled her training.
Both as a Terran Naval officer, and as a Rakhani-kestin in the Azrinkirfrelyatz.
“They’re probing,” the mare said.
“Looking for potential targets,” the vir agreed. Varan’s feline pupils narrowed. “Commerce raiding?”
Meredith considered the question, and nodded. “Politically, the Colonies have been fragmented ever since New Horizon was destroyed. Attacking cargo ships or the beacons could isolate us further, not to mention crippling the various economies.” She paused and scratched an ear. “It’d affect the Empire’s Mercantile Fellowships, too, because you know they bankroll companies here. Like Transcosm.”
Varan nodded in Terran fashion. “Probabilities are high that Threats and Assessments have already come to that conclusion.”
“But there’s still a chance that they didn’t,” Meredith said, and the mare rested her paw on her lover’s hand. “If you tell them, demef, don’t mention me, please.”
Varan gave her a questioning look before gesturing affirmatively.
