I recently lost my cat Gobi to small cell lymphoma, and had to put her to sleep to alleviate her suffering. The night and morning before it happened, she wasn't Gobi- she was a scared and hurting kitten, trying to find a hole to crawl into and die. When I took her to the vet she became herself again, for a little while; the effects of oxygen and painkiller gave her a little bit of comfort while I held her and said my goodbyes. The vet gave me the option of holding her as she administered the final dose. I cried more out of relief than grief; the idea of being able to hold her, protecting her as she passed on, was something I was scared I wouldn't be able to do, and here they were giving me the option.
This afternoon, my best friend of 30 years sent me an X-mas gift to help the healing process. Thank you so very much, SylntSyco, and Foxpirate for the piece. <3
