It is part of a world and overarching plot I have had in mind for awhile. I plan on possibly doing a webcomic of it when my art skills become more developed but the basic idea is the male is a shapeshifting creature who can judge fear and the female is a demigod of sorts who fears death. He is simply showing her in his own dark way that her fear shouldn't control her as much as it does.

Is that like a potion of X-ray vision?

More like a deadly potion! So it's not only showing her bones and meat, but the rotten version of it.
