my unpopular thomas opinions
I’ve been seeing videos of people expressing their unpopular opinions, and I’ve decided to do practically the same thing. Some of the stuff you’re about to read may make some people angry, so if you get angered easily, click away. Anyways, let’s get started.
1: James and Gordon are terrible characters and should have been replaced instead of Edward and henry.
This one is bound to make a bunch of people mad, but let me explain this. James and Gordon were really good characters up until the Brenner era began. There James became an unlikeable asshole who only cares about his red paint, and thinking he’s special, when there are plenty of other red engines on sodor. And Gordon became an unlikeable grump who puts others down whenever he appears. The reason why I think they should have been replaced is that the steam team should consist of nicer engines that are a good influence on children. I’m not saying that James and Gordon will cause children to become asses, but there will always be that one child who will.
2: the logging locos and misty island should have returned after the miller era
If I didn’t make you mad with my last one, I definitely will now. Despite these characters being miller’s versions of Boco and the tank engine twins, I feel like they had a lot of potential for rewrites. Bash and dash are better than bill and ben, because they don’t try to cause trouble like they do, their voices aren’t grating, and the trait with them finishing each other’s sentences is a unique touch. Ferdinand is also a nice character and contrasts bash and dash nicely. The only thing to change with him is his catchphrase “that’s right” be reduced to one time per episode, so that it doesn’t get annoying. As for misty island, I always thought it was interesting. I did when I first saw it, and I still do today. The whole concept about an island with no people and a logging company only run by 3 engines is an interesting concept and makes you wonder “who created this place, why aren’t there any humans?” I feel like if this island were to return, it could be really cool to see how it would change.
3: all the returning characters were poorly done.
Yet another one to trigger people. I was excited when these guys first returned, but now I feel like they should have stayed gone. Duck’s only real character trait now is being great western, nothing about him trying to work efficiently, and nothing about him wanting to go to faraway lands. When he’s not being great western, he’s pretty bland. Oliver just brags about his escape from the scrapyard, while toad doesn’t really do anything. But to me bill and ben are the worst. Their voices are annoying, and they usually act annoying and selfish, and it just makes you hate every second they’re on screen.as for Donald and Douglas, they started out as great characters, but they lost their charm when they began fighting over petty shit and became bill and ben clones. If you ask me, these guys were better off being replaced than poorly rewritten.
4: The ertl Thomas range is overrated
I used to like the ertl Thomas range, and I still do. Don’t get me wrong, ERTL is a great range, but I feel people give it too much praise. For instance, the range is really inconsistent with scale. For instance, toad is bigger than Oliver (much like the cgi series), Toby and Henrietta tower over characters like Gordon. And jock is bigger than Thomas. Another example is with the couplings. The pins can break very easily on some rolling stock. The newer couplings they added towards the end of the range weren’t too better. Sure they were supposedly stronger, but from what I’ve heard they’re more prone to breakage, not to mention they’re pretty distracting. Not as distracting as take n play’s big magnet, but somewhere there. Like I said, I have nothing against the ertl range, but I hate it when people ignore the flaws of it.
I hope you guys liked this.

My unpopular opinion: The original Railway Series is the only era in the franchise that should be considered canon. Everything else is too OOC and out of the intended setting. It was meant to tell tales of things that could - and did - happen on actual railways, and that part of it was lost when the Rev. W. Awdrey passed away and the story-telling torch passed on. Now don't get me wrong, Thomas and the Magic Railroad was a great direct-to-video movie, but probably only because of its nods to the canon TV series, Shining Time Station, in its plot.
While I'm glad to hear that they brought Douglas, Donald, and Duck back, I'm disappointed in them for destroying their character. Also, no more Misty Island: That destroyed the aforementioned heart of the original Railway Series, things that could happen on actual railways, and a logging company run by three engines and no humans is not one of those things. Engineers who read the original series to their kids who liked it because of its commitment to realism aside from the "talking" engines - and let's face it, it was the engineers and drivers talking the whole time - would be appalled at that turn in the continuing "story," if it can even be called that at this point with so many characters acting out-of-character from their original Railway Series personalities.
Also, I grew up with and will forever swear by the Wooden Railway System of my childhood when it comes to the railway playsets. Just saying. (Maybe the model railroading kits as well, but those are for more serious hobbyists.)

I respect your opinion, but keep in mind that there were episodes in the tvs that were based off real life events. Take for example; a better view for Gordon, and there were episodes in the post magic railroad series that were reselling so of rows stories. As for the magic railroad, it doesn't have anything to do with shining time in my universe. I'll have to explain it some other time.
Misty island had great potential for stories, but the whole theme was executed poorly, most likely because of the era it was in. I feel like if it were part of the brenner era, the whole setting would be different, but the concept would have been better.
I actually grew up with wooden railway too, and my site is full of wooden railway stuff, but I do have other brands.
