This is my 3rd attempt at making a knife. Every now and then I have made an attempt and then discarded the project into its appropriate steel bin to be used for later in the future. On the date this has been posted, I have made a proper cutting tool. This knife was made from a section of rail road tie plate that I cut up with an angle grinder. Now, most times out of ten a tie plate is made of lower carbon steel, but there are some cases it is a high carbon steel. This sort of specification is made by the rail company that purchases them from a factory. The rail company crew I asked permission to have a few tie plates gave me the higher carbon sort, by coincidence.
I was actually hoping it was low carbon so I can cut them into smaller billets and forge other things out of, but this is cool too.
This thing is stupidly sharp.
I am not really keen on just forging a great amount of knives. Knives are just a thing I can make, but I don't think I want to be like every other blade smith there is now a days.
