Generally the dark portion of the eyes will contract in bright sunlight or just before a predator attacks. They grow bigger when the animal (and human) is relaxed, in shade, or anticipating something enjoyable.
Aslan was probably thinking that his meal was only a few seconds away and looking forward to it.

That in a way gives even me the willies and I am as lion as they come.

Please do hear me out on this.. This is one reason why people don't need to own these cats as pets. People who own these illegally have no clue at all at the true danger they put themselves in.

Sure I love lions and am one but do I want to own a real one? That would be a loud and clear, HELL NO!
