Insofar as New York City goes, the age of the newsboy had pretty much passed by the late 1920s. A lot of the "newsboys" were, in fact, adults. In some cities (like Chicago), the job of selling papers was so dangerous (and mob-influenced) that the newsboy of old was extinct. The real heyday of the kind of "newsie" that's depicted here would have been the fifteen or so years before the First World War, with maybe the early 1920s being the outside. A lot of newspapers went bust in the 1920s and 1930s in big cities, and that tended to kill things off.
