Think a large mega city, surrounded by a small strip of maybe semi-suburb type lower middle class and then beyond that junkyards/scrapheaps/etc.
Most of our story takes place in the latter portion.
There's a reason the massive buildings in the background don't have windows facing in that direction (besides providing large advertising areas)
