Concerning the speed issue - I had the same type of problem and I figured out that in order to get something done more quickly, sometimes it can be helpful to take a step back and try to draw the same picture again instead of investing all the time into the first version

The starting part of a drawing is a pain in the arse for me too. It takes me a long time to get something started. Once thats done the rest comes along pretty easy for the most part.
