This guy's been a long time in the coming. I worked on and threw away SO many designs for this guy on paper in the standard front/back/side view thing. Eventually I gave up, and just did it digitally, and it all came together. I apparently just can't work on the flat 'character sheet' style approach.

Gruff is a sorta meta character. He's a character in the 80s property that Jua is a fan of, in my comic, Sunshine. It's a weird hybrid of He-Man, She-Ra, Silverhawks, and what not. The painting is a nod to the fantastic Masters of the Universe toys' box art and advertisements, which always showed a much more bleak and serious tone than the Filmation cartoon ever did.
