The Atari 5200 SuperSystem, commonly known as the Atari 5200, is a video game console that was introduced in 1982 by Atari Inc. as a higher end complementary console for the popular Atari 2600. The 5200 was created to compete with the Intellivision, but wound up more directly competing with the ColecoVision shortly after its release.
FACT: The Atari 5200 cartridges were nearly twice the size of those for the 2600 and were basically designed in this fashion to make the consumer think they were getting a "bigger and better" game. The Atari 5200 was also the first videogame console to utilize a "Pause" button on the controller.
My history on this unit was in the late 82 after many other systems came out and both my aunts and my mother was getting me many of the gaming systems at the time my mother brought me the Commodore 64 and the 2600 (Vader Model). My first aunt got me Colecovision and Vectrax and my second aunt got me the 5200 for my birthday in Nov. The Model you seeing here is the 2 Controller Port Unit as my 4 Port one is still packed away but wanted to show you the first four launched games for it.
On launch day the 5200 sold it only came out with 4 games one of the 4 was Super Breakout as a packin game but over time between 1982 and 1984, a total of 69 titles were released.
Galaxian
Pac-Man
Space Invaders
Super Breakout (included with console)

I've seen a grand total of one of these machines. It's a scary dinosaur, all right. Controllers were dead on delivery. Graphics were nice, though. It combined the A/V feed with the power supply. And man did that thing arc with electricity upon connection. Talking a Frankenstein kind of arc, too. And I had to fidget with the works to make the video signal improve.
Then again, I've seen a grand total of zero Atari 7800 units.
