"I think we should rest."
A massive white dire wolf followed after a lithe, nimble doe under leaves and over roots through the forest. Though slumped with clear exhaustion, the deer huntress pressed forward, unwilling to give up just yet.
"Just one more rise," Azariah insisted, panting. She grabbed a low branch and tried to hop over a fallen sapling, but the tip of her hoof caught, and she tumbled down.
"Are you all right?" The wolf was beside her, helping her up with his broad muzzle.
"I'm fine, I just tripped, I--" She wilted as she sat on the forest floor. "I'm so tired."
They had been traveling most of the day and into the evening, ever since their encounter with the Fairies' ring. They knew they had not been far from the edge of the forest when they had been transformed, yet despite Azariah's new, finely-tuned huntress instincts, they could not find a way out.
Shrubie sat down, letting the exhausted doe rest her head against his side.
"Just a few moments, then we'll keep going…" Azariah muttered.
Her eyes fluttered as her head rested against her friend's side. Shrubie sat for a few moments before nudging her.
"Let's get some sleep."
Azariah made no argument, even as she groggily prepared, setting her pack, her bow, and her arrows aside. She undid the straps of her leather armor and pulled it up, over her muzzle, and set it with the rest. The shirt she wore underneath was almost stuck to her fur after being under her armor for so long, but she had nothing else to wear to sleep.
Shrubie walked a circle around the patch of clear ground nearby and settled down, huffing a heavy breath through his nose. He nodded his head to Azariah.
"Come on," he invited. "It will be more comfortable if you rest beside me."
Azariah stumbled over and accepted the invitation, snuggling into Shrubie's lush white fur. The wolf nuzzled her briefly before setting his head on his paws and closing his eyes.
"We'll get one, maybe two hours of sleep," Azariah mumbled, already half asleep. "We can't be far, maybe... another hour…"
She was asleep before she could finish her thought.
The two transformed friends slept peacefully all night long, warm and comfortable together even in unfamiliar forms.
As it happened, Azariah was not far off. The forest's edge was indeed quite near, but the village which sat at its border was not the modern metropolis they might have expected. It was an old town of small wooden buildings, clustered together by a river and lit only by torches and lanterns. The Fairies' mischief went deeper than they had first believed...
