I initially included a DeLorean as a sight gag (Kathy's grandfather restoring one to full functionality, like an old guy restoring a '57 Chevy). Then in order to move the plot forward, I had Fred-from-the-future come and pack up Kathy's apartment, indicating that in two weeks there would be terrible consequences if they didn't get to Rackenroon on time. He shoved all the furniture into a TARDIS (and it poured out of a closet on Skarro.) In the novel of Fred's diary, he hired the Tri-state Area Removals, Disposals, and Indefinite Storage company to pack up the apartment. The time travel was largely written out, but hinted at being possible, because the diaries are a little more "pay attention to the laws of physics" than the cartoon is.
Later, Kathy's grandfather Leo used the TARDIS to find out who tried to kill Kathy's other grandfather, Reggie.
Then Future Fred appeared "in a dream" to both Sandy and Present Fred, to warn them that Present Fred needed to fall in love with Kathy in order to save the country--if he didn't, Kathy and sandy would be assassinated by lions on Kathy's wedding day, because Fred would not be there to stop them.
The time machine(s) are my "gimme" device, and I'm trying to use them only to expedite the plot, because I know that time travel stories need to be very carefully written.
I've made the fourth wall cartoon to essentially take off the table the possibility of Fred and Kathy going into the future to spend a year preparing her for the duel. By acknowledging the absurdity of it, it removes it from consideration.
And believe me, I was tempted.

How about stuffing Jinjur in the time machine. Run her back ten years and seal her into a private cell in the catacombs, with an armored food dispenser containing only one type of emergency rations and all the water she can drink. Tell everyone that that area is haunted to keep the curious away.
The cell opens five minutes after she was removed. Then Koz 'finds' her and takes her to see a doctor.
