The theory is that the molecular bonds are at their strongest, the fewer molecules the bonds need to exert themselves over, so a monofilamnet would cut through steel like a hot wire through butter. I have my doubts this is so, but such monofilament weapons have been around in the SF genre since at least the 70s.
