Difficult as it is, and as good as it's been to me over the last three hundred years, I'm going to try to pull myself away from Modplug in favour of more flexible music software (or at least those that other people also use). This is the first couple of minutes of a new song I've been working on, put together in Guitar Pro 5 and rendered in Tracktion with me on the rhythm part. Usual time-stretching trickery applies.
I'm still learning mixing in Tracktion as I go along, and it'll take me a while to get the balance of sound that I had in Modplug. I still need to do vocal harmonies, replace the electronic lead guitar part with an actual guitar, and continue the song. I love the sound of the bass, though I'm unsure if the pause in the rhythm near the start to let it through just makes it sound like I've forgotten what I'm playing.
I find the change of instruments offsets some of the sugariness of it - this is probably one of the happiest songs I've written in a while, which is why it may surprise you to learn that it's currently called Soul Eater.

This almost reminded me of something...it was one of those things where it wasn't a direct Kai Hansen lift or anything, just a subtle sort-of-like, but the fact that the connection was so tenuous only made it that much harder for me to think of where I had heard...whatever it was this vaguely reminded me of before. That drove me absolutely crazy for a good five minutes before I finally got it--the pre-chorus (0:36) sort of vaguely reminds me of the pre-chorus to Avantasia's Neverland ("And while they are pulling strings/While they are in command....")
Anyway, I like this! The new instruments certainly give it a new and interesting sound compared to your other work, but it's quite nice. And this new song is good, too, even if it did drive me crazy until I figured that out.

Interesting that I've done that to you twice in such a short space of time, with songs that I don't know! (Well, I'd semi-heard Judas at the Opera before...) That section is actually named "Heavenly bridge" in the tab file - I don't think I took it directly from any particular song but it has the same style of rhythm section as something from Virus (with the small muted runs of notes).
It's going to take me a while to get a sound I'm really happy with through Tracktion - not releasing a purely electronic version of each song would be a very large step, even more than the way that I'm dealing with a whole new music format and library of instruments as it is, but I'm more pleased with my own performed rhythm here than with any electronic guitar-simulating instrument that I've yet tried. I may cave and compose in Modplug again if I find the sudden change stifles my writing, but I really love the sound so far - composing with Guitar Pro 5 means that I can have much more complex and less repetitive rhythm guitar parts, for a start.

Thanks :) It was eventually finished, kept the same title, and you can hear it here! http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3660060
