Feels kinda weird that I might consider this my most 'normal' piece done in a while.
This actually isn't done... but I'm quite fond of how the flats work with the clean linework that I decided to add a simple background to it before I decide to go back in and do some real magic to it, whenever that'll be. This was a real push for me only because I don't feel that good at the moment. I've got this throat thing that's really bugging me but I really wanted to get some kind of artwork out anyway-- and now I'm just making excuses.
Feels good to draw someone else's character who I've found appealing for quite some time, in secret, but... not so secret anymore I guess?
So anyway, there was alot meant to go into this but like i said, I REALLY like how this came through. Oh right, this is also a bit of fanart for
mayonnaise-face as I added her swanky little character in there. You'll see what this is about in a moment:
Standing around at a random location just bordering Sierrace and Semper Oaks, Teufel and Juju stood along a busy side street, lounging their existence along a sidewalk path as they kept near a building as not to obstruct traffic. They watched the denizens of the neighboring cities' bordering populous hurry past them, doing whatever it was they needed to do during the day while the two of them remained open ended which delved into discussion:
"I haven't seen you in church lately, Juju..." Father Teufel pressed, crossing his arms where he stood.
"Yeaaah, about that..." Juju began.
"God has no use for excuses, Juju." Teufel interjected as Juju glimpsed back down at Teufel.
"Damn man, damn you. Do you always have to go Old Testament on my ass about this?" Juju whined.
"Maybe if I saw you at church last Sunday, maybe. We do have Saturday mass you know that?"
"Wait a minute... those exist?" Juju asked.
"Lord, give me strength..." Teufel sighed heavily, pushing a palm into his forehead and shaking his gaze shortly.
"Hey I'm new to this whole Catholic religious thing! I've been Shinto for a really long time now. Japanese family? Dojo? The temple in the back of my family's house should've been a big sign Teufel." Juju explained.
"Indeed. A sign of your blasphemous false gods."
"Spirits!" Juju exclaimed.
"Heresy!" Teufel screamed back.
"You're impossible! UGH!" Juju fired back.
"So is God." Teufel finalized.
"This is-- this is why I don't go to church!" Juju stammered ridiculously as he pointed at Teufel accusingly.
Teufel blustered into laughter before settling down himself and looked back up at Juju who stood of considerable height compared to him and relaxed in his stance while Juju leaned back against a wall, "So what's this deliberating discussion you wanted to have with me?"
"Can we consider this an off the record confessional?" Juju asked.
"Why on Earth would you want that?" Teufel asked.
"So I don't have to go to church on Sunday?" Juju questioned.
"I just said there's Saturday mass you dolt!" Teufel barked.
"So mean!" Juju replied.
"But if it makes you feel better, I suppose... but you should still consider coming on Saturday." Teufel acknowledged.
"Fair enough... okay so I've been thinking about how the internet has been weakening our social facades as sapient beings." Juju started.
"Such as what? Upon what grounds?" Teufel asked.
"I mean in general, how we're sort of reckoning a second renaissance that isn't proclaimed? Or the Enlightenment..." Juju paused momentarily.
"Juju, I don't think the Renaissance had anything similar to what we have these days... God forbid meme's existed when Leonardo Da Vinci was finalizing his first masterpiece."
"See that's what I'm talking about! Like those for instance... but I'm not getting into that specifically, I'm more inclined towards like, social institutions." Juju pointed out.
"Like church?"
"Like Blockbuster!"
"What?" Teufel asked with stern confusion.
"Since the dawn of the internet, nearly everything has become instantaneous, more so than ever before, and certain places like Blockbuster are on the fringes of near non-existence." Juju insisted.
"I don't think Blockbusters will be disappearing anytime soon though, Juju." Teufel remarked.
"Maybe not soon, true, but it could happen! A remarkable piece of history will be forgotten because of obsoletion!"
"I'm sure Blockbuster will learn to adapt though, I'm sure it already has."
"You could be right... but I'm worried about the actual standing in which places like Blockbuster might not exist as physical locations anymore."
"Why would you be worried about that?" Teufel questioned.
"Where else am I supposed to go meet dames on an open ended Friday or weekend night?"
"Oh good grief-- is that what this is about?!" Teufel agitated.
"It could be?! But seriously--"
"No! That is what this is about! You're just beating around the bush!"
"Alright fine, maybe it is! But I rather like the idea of knowing I'm still in control of my own romantic destiny!"
"How do you figure?" Teufel calmed down to inquire Juju on this topic.
"Well since you'd like to hear about it-- the internet has also taken away our idea of dating and have given us the instantaneously matched dating service sites."
"Some would say those are open ended options."
"Laziness I say... or you could be right... but I'm not rather fond of going to a place specifically for that purpose."
"But if it works..."
"Then I guess I'm entitled to my own opinion... but I'm rather drawn to the idea of actually meeting that certain someone face to face, if even to make a difference in her life at that given moment... so going back to the movie rental places, like Blockbuster... walking in and that feeling you get knowing there's a near infinite possibility of choices for you there." Juju paused again.
"Are we talking about movies or women?"
"Movies?"
"You disappoint me Juju..."
"Women! Fine! So yeah I'm wandering through the separated genres of games and movies alike, horror... classic, comedy... action-- then suddenly I'll see her. In whatever category she'll be in, but she'll be there. Cataloging the rentals, browsing for that one movie she'll want to bring home and watch in the comforts of her own home in recognizable surroundings and safety... and the possibility I might be introduced to those surroundings." Juju romanticized.
"A rather romantic view of the dating scene... or 'the hunt' as Jackie would call it."
"Hahahahaha! Yeah that... see, it's that part of the whole human contact thing that I appreciate the most."
"I'm a priest so I wouldn't really know but I think I have an idea... ... still... I guess I can see where you're going with this. How the internet has in weird ways disconnected us but reconnected us into a new lifestyle, culture... yet there are people like you remaining to hold onto the way things were. Ya know, some people would call that being stubborn." Teufel suggested.
"And being part of a theology that's remained faithful to a god for over 2,000 years isn't?"
"Watch it, my son. You're treading on hallowed ground for such a bold statement." Teufel pointed at Juju.
"Fine, fine... course going back to the movies-- I wouldn't mind going to the rental store to pick up a Kurt Russell movie. Maybe Big Trouble in Little China or something." Juju commented.
"Say what? Hahahaha! Why Kurt Russell? Why Big Trouble in Little China?" Teufel asked.
"Father, you just don't know about Jack Burton and the Porkchop Express!" Juju remarked proudly.
"Better off I don't it seems." Teufel commented.
And just before that awkward moment of silence that men plainly know too well and can remain comfortable with, it was broken by a young woman's voice who had overheard a portion of the remaining discussion between Juju and Teufel and decided to pull herself upon them in question.
"I'm sorry, but did I overhear someone say Porkchop Express?" The young woman, a rather petite, large eared anthrop in an orange long sleeve top, dark ash leggings and lilac flat shoes, had asked, leaning over past Teufel to catch Juju's attention as she pointed at him daintly.
"Actually, yeah, you did. We were just talking movies." Juju replied.
"You wouldn't happen to be talking about a Kurt Russell flick would you?"
The young woman asked, smiling back interestingly.
Juju and Teufel only eyed each other for a moment before Teufel knew exactly what was going on and began striding past Juju as he waved a hand behind him at Juju.
"I'll see you on Sunday, Juju. I'm sure I'll absolutely love the story you'll have to tell by then."
Teufel had made a great amount of distance now as he walked away yet the last few bit of words put the young woman at a disadvantage. Feeling curious, she approached Juju about it, "What'd he mean by that?"
"Oh. Nothing." Juju glanced back at Teufel, who continued walking away before looking back at the girl again, "Hey! I got an idea. Let's go down to a rental shop and pick up Big Trouble in Little China!" Juju insisted.
"Ooh! We could have a Kurt Russell marathon! I just gotta know though... are you a fan of any of John Carpenter's Escape From duology?"
"No but I've a feeling I will be after this." Juju replied back with a grin.
