My entry for a Sketchoholic contest to depict the Cheshire Cat from "Alice in Wonderland".
Some design notes: The inspiration were those calico cats where the face is perfectly split between orange and black. Originally he was purple and green on one side with the colors reversed on the other, but as krisCrash pointed out, this made him look like Two-Face. I was also afraid the exposed skull was too goth-twee, so I toned that down a bit from the original sketch.
It's supposed to look like he's disappearing in random, asymmetric patches starting with the skin, then the muscles and nerves, then the bone (leaving the grin, of course), the flame flickering along the edges like burning paper . . . if that makes sense. The human hands are because one idea was to draw him as very human, until I figured that would look too much like an anime catboy. There were claws, but I deleted them - they distracted from the face.
Oscar 'posed' for this. I got the perfect expression by flicking his nose with a feather. It bugged him enough that he scowled, but not so much that he could be bothered to actually get up and, you know, move.
The rough sketch is here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3422153/

No reason that's easy to articulate. When I'm trying to come up with an idea I run through a lot of associations . . . maybe I had been watching "Thundercats" recently, or something randomly triggered the idea. I think it was specifically how the Big Bad Wolf is sometimes shown as a wolf, sometimes as a guy with only a few wolfy traits. The Wonderland critters in the original illustrations are real mix as far as how much they're anthropomorphised. The cat is very animallike, I wanted to do something I felt might be a bit different.
Looks like Schrödiger's Cat fell into a particle accelerator.
It looks really great, the expression, the colors, the disappearing half with his eye looking like a ball lightning, the dress, the pose, everything. And then darkened green background with the ink trees and the We Are All Mad Here adds a whole new dimension to the picture, both background and cat alone would already be great and together they look brilliant!
