||<<<PREVIOUS||FIRST||NEXT>>>||The sound of crickets could be heard chirping nearby as the Dutchling sleeps. The air is cold but fresh with sea air, a frost swept over the tall grass while a short breeze wakes the little one. This is not Madame Olivia’s estate, in fact, it’s nowhere near her at all. The Dutchling is startled to their feet seeing that somehow they are… where are they exactly? Looking around, they were standing near a cliffside, an ocean crashing below. They blink a few times, trying to make sense of things. ‘If I just close my eyes for a moment I’ll be back in bed, it’s just a dream. Just a dream, right? Just…’ they sniff into the air and wiggle their ears to the crickets. They search around for the source of the sound until they see a tiny dark brown… six legged thing? Their eyes flash a soft yellow in excitement following this weird new creature as it hops along chirping. Without another beat, the Dutchling mimics the cricket, chirping back at it in perfect sync. They happily skip along with the crickets until suddenly, the crackle of fire can be heard in the distance. The little one looks around to see a faint glow amongst some covered wagons. Music from various string instruments were playing accompanied by joyful singing. The Dutchling tilts their head curiously, trotting over to see a large group of humans having a grand time. Some were boisterous and rough housing off to the side, some children were running around the crowd, others were singing and dancing. Little one drew closer to the crowd, seemingly to be hidden in plain sight in the tall grass. Slightly off to the side, happily singing, was a couple. A large man with a well tamed black beard and long black wavy hair, and a woman that had a well built figure with half down the back length black hair. They were holding a toddler, who could be at least a year old, giggling and cooing at the parents while they sang with their kin. The Dutchling perks their ears at the small child, seeing that strange golden dust whisping around them. In fact, a lot of gold dust started to appear around everyone in the vicinity. Agitated, the Dutchling starts rubbing their face against the grass in an attempt to wipe away the anomalies. In an instant, upon opening their eyes again, they start seeing red symbols above the human heads. Then above the crickets, and other strange creatures around the area. The red symbols seem to be changing in random fashion as the Dutchling reels from being overwhelmed.
But the toddler… whoever they were… looked straight towards the Dutchling. Despite the strange anomalies obstructing their vision, the Dutchling couldn’t help but feel drawn towards the child. While no one else in the crowd seemed to notice the presence in the grass, the Dutchling makes eye contact with the toddler. The toddler reached out towards the creature while the parents sang, and it seemed the world began to fall silent. The little creature slowly calms, the child’s hands glowing a soft gold. The Dutchling closed their eyes once more… and it was quiet.
Open, and the little one is standing on the marble tile in the middle of the hallway of the estate. Taken aback, the Dutchlings fur on their back stood on end in confusion and fear.
“Starshine, what are you doing out here? You should be asleep…” seemingly out of nowhere stood Cirrus, picking up the little one by the nape, bringing them back to Olivia’s room.
