Even though THE CONSOLE WARS really started with the Atari's VCS vs. Mattel's Intellivision in 1978 to many of today's gamers THE CONSOLE WARS really fired up in the 90s with Nintendo's SNES and the Sega's GENESIS.
The Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive outside North America, is a 16-bit home video game console developed and sold by Sega. The Genesis is Sega's third console and the successor to the Master System. Sega released it as the Mega Drive in Japan in 1988, and later as the Genesis in North America in 1989.
The Genesis/Mega Drive was the first of the 16 bit machines to achieve notable market share in Europe and North America, but not in it’s native Japan, It was a direct competitor of the TurboGrafx-16 (which was released one year earlier in Japan under the name PC Engine, but at about the same time as the Genesis in North America) and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (which was released two years later). The Sega Mega Drive began production in Japan in 1988 and ended with the last new licensed game being released in 2002 in Brazil.
My back story on the Genesis was when I first seen and played it was at a friends apt that I lived near him and he got it for his birthday and later that year I got my hand on it in late Nov of 89 at Lionel Kiddie City.
The system supports a library of more than 700 games created both by Sega and a wide array of third-party publishers and delivered on ROM cartridges. But on its first launch only 6 games came out in the US and they are
Altered Beast (packin game)
Last Battle
Space Harrier II
Super Thunder Blade
Thunder Force II
Tommy Lasorda Baseball
