Abigail is one of my favorite furry characters and it's a shame she's so obscure. Go rent the movie "Once Upon A Forest" right this second. It looks lame, but it's actually really cute and it has great characters.

Ain't it? I'm assuming you read my own musings on the film:

This may be a bit blasphemous, but I think overall Once Upon A Forest is a better made movie than Disney's Robin Hood. Yes, that one had the hawt foxes, but it also felt like, 'Let's rush this one out so we can go to lunch early, guys'. They paid more attention to both character and animation in OUAF.
Someone uploaded OUAF on Youtube last week and I just got done watching the whole thing for the first time in a decade.
The animation and art style was great! The story.. well, I'm a sucker for 'animal society' and 'kids on a big adventure' tropes. But I think Ferngully handled the whole 'save the planet' thing better. All in all, a good film to watch and a must-see if you're a furry. I swear if I have kids one day, I'm going to end up referring to them as 'furlings.'

Really!? <zips over there to rip every single section of it>
See, I dunno. I watched Ferngully a while back and was actually surprised by how... flaccid it feels in retrospect. They put a lot into the animation, but story-wise, it's so chocked full of clichés it's a little hard to watch. OUAF had similar pitfalls (especially the endless marsh bird scene), but overall I think it had a better story. And I was surprised to find out eyebright and lungwort are real herbs!
Oh, and that is a given. Sometimes I almost accedentially call kids in my stories 'furlings'.

Today, I've watched a bunch of films I haven't seen in ages. Once Upon A Forest, We're Back, Troll in Central Park, Rock-a-Doodle... I'm in total nostalgia mode now.
Ferngully's story wasn't really much either but I think it handled the perception of humans better. True, in OUAF, the human's caused the destruction purely by accident and ended up letting Edgar go and clearing the meadow of traps. But they're mostly seen as a faceless force of eeevil which is common in things like this.
But, in Ferngully, one of the humans actually ends up joining the goodies and helping them stop the destruction. I like the more personal feeling of it. Plus, I got a bit of a fantasy of going out in the woods, upsetting (accidentally or otherwise) someone mystical, and getting turned into an animal. Ferngully semi-indulged me on this.
Finally, Batty Koda. I'd be lying if I said that nut didn't influence who I am today somehow.

I have seen Rock-A-Doodle, but only remember it vaguely. I know there was a boy who turns into a kitten.
Actually, both films fall into the trap of 'progress is bad' and 'humans are just destroying the environment for No Reason!'. As if logging or construction businesses just do it for kicks. I've learned some surprising stuff about environmentalism since I was a kid. There are more trees now in America than 100 years ago (because most paper comes from tree farms). Recycling is actually nowhere near as good for the environment as everyone thinks (because the transportation and actual process take up a ton of energy). Modern landfills are clean and produce energy in the form of methane. And of course, bottled water leads to tons and tons and TONS of empty plastic unbiodegradable bottles everywhere. Unfortunately, like a lot of movements that start off good, many environmental groups have become so addicted to their righteous rage that they're ignoring reality in favor of what they WANT to believe. I'm still very much an environmentalist and animal rights guy, but I try to choose which battles actually should be fought.
I can totally dig the 'mystical forest adventure' thing. I'd love to get turned into a furry critter too! :D
Agreed: Batty Koda = awesome. Although I totally rolled my eyes at the thundrously clichéd 'Oh, he's dead! Look, he's not!' bit that it seems like EVERY cartoon movie must have! ;p
Also agreed; I'm impressed they wre able to handle Abigail's character so well. She's very nearly a bully in a few scenes near the beginning, but they keep it realistic and never go too far with it. It's rare a kid's movie will grasp that concept of 'not every hero is perfectly good all the time'.

Rock-a-Doodle you got down. That was all I remembered about it too! That and the Big Bad gets turned all teensy tiny in the end. Revenge makes for a good ending to me.
To tell the truth, I'm actually a former e-member of Greenpeace. I sorta left after realizing how against genetic engineering they were. At the time, I was looking into the field of biotechnology for possible dream jobs, so it grated on me a bit. Did you know modern corn is almost all geneticly modified? 100 years ago, corn was paler, the rows of kernels were uneven, and some of the kernels on a cob would be red or brown or green. Modern, uniformly straight'n'yellow corn was modified to be that way.
I have, in RPs with my friends, been turned into an animal in the wilderness about 3 times. Once into a bat, once into a monkey, and once into a squirrel. It never gets old to me!
Yea, Batty's non-death annoyed me too. I fell for it the first time, because I was a kid, but the second time years later, it just came off as 'what was the point of that?'
Yeah, kid movies don't have a lot of balance to their characters. Goodies are perfectly perfect while every facet of baddies is at it's nadir. That's why I liked Jungledyret Hugo. Rita's mom is awesome.

That was another thing I heard about, how Greenpeace is so terrified of 'frankenfood'; to the point of encouraging starving countries to refuse offers of grain and corn. *shakes head* I really get sick of people who automatically assume that all new science is bad. Is this the freakin' medieval era? And don't even get me started on stem cells! People's emotions should never trump scientific fact.
I wanna be a bat!! :D
"what was the point of that?" Exactly! It's pretty much just a standard emotionally manipulative cartoon thing. It's an easy way to draw a reaction out of the audience. I avoid it unless I'm either gonna reveal that they're not dead right away, so it's just a momentary jolt, or _really_ screw with the readers and drag it out for whole chapters. >:)
How can I see the Hugo movies!? I so very want to! Rita is ADORABLE!!!

Having just finished up a Biology 101 course, I can safely say modified food isn't going to do nothing to any y'all. It's also got much less bugs and diseases in it. Why pay more for bugs and diseases in your food? I never bought into that whole 'organic' crap.
Bat was good, but there's something to be said for being a monkey. Hardly anyone cares about simians!
You honestly did scare me in Dangerous Lunatics with Tyler's comatizing. All through that chapter, I was subvocalizing 'Disembody yourself! Please, man! Don't just sit there!' I think I even mumbled it outloud a few times. I seriously didn't want a fried mouse.
And, lastly, Youtube it. I swear, Youtube is cartoon central for me. Just search for 'Jungledyret.' They got the first and second movies up, plus episodes of the animated TV series!

*nods* Similarly, how can any thinking person prefer spring water, that fish and bears have probably shat in, to clean, filtered tapwater? The only damn taste difference is in their minds. (Although, bizarrely, the best water I've ever tasted in my life? New York City rainwater! Really! I happened to be there on a field trip, walking around Times Square with an empty cup and decided 'what the hey'.)
I think monkeys are too close to humans; most furries would rather be something more exotic.
<evil grin> Yeah, I was trying to channel Joss Whedon with that story; wanting to whip the readers up into a bit of a frenzy. Of course, no matter what nightmares I put my characters through, things always turn out happy in the end. :)
Really? Yaaaaaaaaaaaay!! <run to YouTube> I'm especially happy to have gotten OUAF because now I can take a zillion screenshots! ^__^

Best water I had? School fountain water. I don't know what it is about it but it's just so refreshing.. middle of the school day, bunch of classes, tons of kids around you, most of whom hate your socially awkward ass.. then you get this chilly, delicious drink of water during recess and it's like you're in the eye of the storm.
Monkeys are close to humans but they got their little exoticness. Prehensile tails and hand feet! I found it pretty cool. Plus, the fact that almost no one did them interested me.
I /knew/ you wouldn't let anything bad happen and would end on a good note. But no matter how much I tried, I still felt awful. I measure 'artistic quality' in how much a piece of art draws emotion from it's audience. Dangerous Lunatics ranks very high on my scale!
Yep. Well done to Youtube!

Actually, my state's tapwater is pretty yecchy, including fountain water, so I mostly slug down Dr. Pepper. it's probably slowly killing me, but tis better than cigars.
Prehensile tails = nifty. And of course in cartoons, ALL tails are prehensile. I always loved on Rescue Rangers when Gadget would use her tail for a lockpick! :)
*blush* Thanks very much then. I do try my best to feel whatever my characters are feeling while I'm writing a scene. This can get pretty draining when I'm writing something like DL!
Have you noticed that the FA banner is now displaying little YouTube links? I've been laughing my ass off at the dark, subtle absurdity of the "Look Around You" clips.

It's better then the water in England, I bet. That stuff was so hard, I didn't even want to take a shower in it.
Even tiny, stubby tails like bat or hamster tails? The image of Foxglove trying to unlock something with her tail makes me giggle.. her tail's so short, it'd look like she's just rubbing her butt all over the keyhole!
You're welcome. You're a truly amazing writer and I wish I had the patience and practice to sit down and write something.
Oh, wow, Look Around You? I too have been edjukated by Look Around You! My favorite one was on iron.

I happened to visit my friend Ray while his (normally warm) state was undergiong their coldest winter in forty years. Sleeping with four blankets was like sleeping on the lawn. Plus, he was having water pressure problems. So imagine taking a dribbly shower with ice-cold water. I could only stand one, and just stayed sweaty the rest of the visit.
Foxglove butt on keyhole is THE CUTEST MENTAL IMAGE I'VE HEARD IN WEEKS. I can totally see her trying to do a tail-lockpick like Gdget and getting all frustrated, and Dale standing there grinning like a loon and wishing he was that keyhole. ^__^
Aw, writing for fun isn't that hard. You don't have to start out with novels. Just try a little vignette sometime. A daydream. Yiff stories are good for novice authors because they don't necessarily have to have any plot. :)
I just saw the one on Sulfur, and it's my favorite so far. I loved the freakin' eye beams!!!

Eek, that's a lot of cold there. Though I can stand cold better then heat, I think. Neither one is nice, but I'd rather be shivering and have a tiny walnut between my legs then be constantly wiping sweat off. I think growing up in a desert just makes one hate the heat.
Given Foxglove's aptitude with magic, Dale could very well be that keyhole!
Yes, I know.. I just need to get the ball rolling and I know it'll be smoother after that!
I can't think of a single Look Around You episode that didn't have something funny in it. Sulphagne, bumcivilian, the Boite Diabolique.. that show is just gold.

Same here. Plus, it's easier to deal with cold than heat. If you're cold, just curl up in bed with a good book and some plushies. :)
Man, that would rock to be with a gorgeous bat who could turn you into virtually anything. "Ever wanted to exist in a gaseous state, cutiepie?"
*nods* Writing down your dreams can also be good practice. And stream-of-consciousness writing is fun as heck!
Intelligent Freakin' Calcium!! How do they THINK of this stuff!? Plus, the second season has Machadaynu, and I freakin' WORSHIP the remix of that song.
