Of the families in MLP, the Sparkle family must be my favorite. As far as I can see, Twilight and Shining Armor had been raised by two of the most wonderful parents — long before Celestia became their dominant figure.
One of my favorite episodes is “Once Upon a Zeppelin”. Star Tracker stands for just about every male brony who’s wanted to meet the Sparkle family. As I remember, I was amazed how much Mr. and Mrs. Sparkle made the young Earth pony feel at home.
The above toy is an unlicensed plush from the Netherlands (https://www.aniworld4u.com/en/Contact). Unfortunately, there is a terrible lack of sleep for official merchandise for Twilight’s own father. I bought mine from eBay, but it originated here: https://www.aniworld4u.com/en/my-li.....sh-Night-Light. The best I can tell, limited quantities of unlicensed merchandise are allowed in the Netherlands, if this article is anything to go by: https://www.aniworld4u.com/en/blog/.....actory-plushes.
In my head, I have the idea for a toy set based on “Once Upon a Zeppelin”. It would have every member of the Sparkle family, and it would have Star Tracker (and possibly Iron Will). The toy zeppelin might be made to fly, and be filled with real helium (possibly by activating a can hidden inside). The toy would also come with an activity set based on the favorite things of the Sparkle family.

I've looked forward to reading about Mr. Sparkle. I had wished I could have 'seen' Once Upon A Zeppelin. There seems to be a lot of good visuals of the family interacting. We also see how Cadence looks out for Shining Armor for she doesn't rub in his air sickness problems.
I liked how Flurry could integrate with other foals her age. You really didn't see her with other foals in the show and, personally, I feel interaction with other children is very important towards building a good moral and ethical compass. The world is all about you until you see how it is far bigger than that. The more Flurry is with the other ponies, the better a future princess she will be.
Twilight was also a good sport despite having been put on the spot. The pony who won time with the family also was good natured and not at all hurt when it was realized how twilight was hoodwinked into this situation.
There was a lot of positive moments for the Sparkle family. The best being when Iron Will jumped ship and allowed the family to take over the rest of the 'vacation' so all could be happy.
The only downside is how Spike was not brought along as family. Though someone did need to stay back and Spike, loyal and faithful, would not back down from knowing something he could do would allow Twilight to relax and be with her loved ones.

I don’t think I really thought about Spike’s absence. I guess the inclusion of Mr. Sparkle, Shining Armor, and Star Tracker distracted me from that possible flaw. Until “Sparkle’s Seven”, Spike felt like Twilight’s personal project, rather than a true member of the Sparkle family.
Spike became a full member of the team from Season 6 forward. His leadership with Thorax and Ember cements this new status. Yet he still felt a little like Twilight’s pet, despite feeling like an equal overall. His subservient relationship with Twilight never seems to completely fade away. Yet he seems capable of rebelling if he feels mistreated. His rebellious behavior in “Father Knows Beast” might have been more understandable than most fans give credit for.
In my own work, with my own original characters, Phoenix the dragon has been Nightlight
and White Night’s personal project. Up to now, he may never have had a close relationship with their parents. Early in my series, Mr. and Mrs. Guidelight boot him out of the mansion because of his sleeping problems. These pony parents didn’t feel like trying to build a fireproof sleeping chamber.
Unlike Spike, Phoenix refuses to be identified as anyone’s assistant. As a highly social creature, he often loves offering help. But he expects to be treated as a full partner.
I get to thinking — what if Twilight were a white teenage girl and Spike were a black boy? Might Spike’s situation for much of the show have smelled of Jim Crow?

This is why I like shows with multi-colored cartoon animals. It helps to keep the racism concerns down. This is not to say it can't still come off as alienating and/or belittling certain character types. However it makes immediate real life racism issues come up a lot less by, largely, avoiding insertion of 'token' characters.
I think Twilight gets a pass for how she was with Spike. It's not right but almost every pony was ignorant to dragons, what they could do, and if they could be friendly with equines.
This also brings up how relations with the Griffons had happened quite a long time ago. There is a little known, or barely considred, concept of how Gilda, from what we saw, was the only Griffon at Junior Speedsters. Could this have been an early attempt at inter-species relations?
What I also gather is a lot of the fears about Spike were created through being 'magically hatched'. We saw how dragon eggs don't hatch unless given a lot of heat to warm them. Spike's egg certainly had not the benefit of such incubation and was brought forth through a magical surge. This surge could explain why he seems to have matured slower and also why he had that moment in 'Secret Of My excess'.
Though, all things considered, the Sparkle family, and much of Equestria, never treated Spike like a lower life form. I think they were just largely too ignorant to how to act around a dragon and dragons, to this point, were viewed as violent and unfriendly creatures.
