The Dog, The Cock, And The Fox
By: Aesop
There lived a dog and a cock on a farmyard, which were very good friends.
One day, the dog and the cock decided that they would want to see the world beyond the farmyard. They said goodbye to their friends on the farmyard and began their journey.
Soon, it was nightfall, and the cock began to look for a place to roost. It spotted a hollow tree that he thought would be a good place to rest for the night. He could fly up on one of the branches while the dog could creep inside the tree.
The dog agreed that the hollow tree was a fine resting place, and soon, they were asleep.
Dawn came and the cock awoke. Thinking that he was still in the farmyard, the cock began to crow.
The cock's crowing caught the attention of a fox in the woods, which immediately rushed to the hollow tree.
"A very good morning to you, Mr Cock," said the fox very politely. "What a fine morning it is!"
"A very good morning to you, too, Mr Fox," replied the cock.
"Would you like to come to my house for breakfast, Mr Cock?" asked the fox.
The cock knew what the fox had in mind, so he said, "Why, thank you very much, Mr Fox. Perhaps you would like to come into my house for breakfast instead?"
When the fox heard that, he was very excited. "My pleasure."
"Please go around the tree where you will find the door to my house, and my porter will let you in," said the cock.
The unsuspecting fox couldn't wait for his meal and quickly did as he was told. But as soon as he went around the tree, the dog seized him.
Moral: Those who try to deceive may expect to be paid in their own coin.
