...so everything I do with birdies looks like tiny hookbills or budgies and I just can't seem to get the owl face right.

So, gryphons are pretty badass xD I really like the cute expression on this gryphon, reminds me of a lion cub :}
And OH COOL, a Muchi! ;D Her face came out really pretty ♥
Assuming this is the one you asked for a little help with, here's a few things I can suggest.
The neck seems a little long (if you imagine her standing straight, that's a rather long neck) and Muchi really has very little neck. The legs are very long here (nothing wrong with that, but it works better for a barn owl than a fat little strigidae) and avians generally have 'chicken legs'... That means large thighs. Drumsticks :}
The breasts appear to be on a different angle to the rest of her also (they appear at a 3/4 angle whereas the rest is a profile.

(Bare in mind the line tweaking is by no means perfect, just meant to give you a better idea of what I'm saying. Hopefully not too offensive! ^^;)
