to me. it was a walking and peeing simulator, the story was a philosophical pretentious mess, and the gameplayh made no sense.....sorry, IF YOU LIKE IT, I DO RESPECT THAT. but....kojima became the apple computers of video games, he stopped trying, cus he knows his fanbase will buy anything he does.
Considering how other games called "walking simulators" play like, I'd hesitate to even call Death Stranding that. The story being a philosophical, pretentious mess is kinda... par for the course for Hideo Kojima. And the gameplay not making sense... Not quite sure how in most cases. Most of it I grasped pretty easily enough.
Kojima can be faulted for a number of things, but he's no "apple of video games". That's Nintendo. And I think it's unfair to say people only like the game because it's Kojima and not that people actually enjoyed the game.
A thing I keep in mind is separating what a bad game is and what a game I don't like is. Something like New Gundam Breaker is what I'd consider a bad game. Something like Dark Souls 2 is what I'd consider a game I do not like but, some issues aside, would not call it a terrible game outside of my own personal opinion of it. Something like Digimon World: Next Order is what I'd consider a good game but with a specific gameplay structure that only some people would get. And Death Stranding is more of the latter.

you have a point, but still. i am so tired of kojima fancult.....it's so toxic, maybe that has influenced my opinion on him, i liked mgs5 a lot. even if the plot made no darn sense at all. the open world like action gameplay, with espionage and stealth as an optional way to play it. it was very good.
but yeah....death stranding is like sushi, of some, it's a delicious dish, for others, it's raw fish with gooey rice and crunchy seaweed. maybe his next project will be less artistic and more commercial, maybe.

I haven't played it yet, so I guess I'll come to my own conclusion. (No spoilers, please.)
That said, Of Mice and Sand has been my current 'pixel meth' addiction. Ya can't beat a buncha lo-res mice trying to survive a desert planet while maintaining a big Jawa sandcrawler. :)
That and Disco Elysium (much different kinda game) has a great story line.

i am hooked on UNTITLED GOOSE GAME. dear god. that game is digital crack cocaine :)
and, yes, i do respect a good story on games. SPEC OPS: THE LINE, UNDERTALE, NI NO KUNI. those games are great, but their story make them them even bigger. so, yeah, i totally understand you.
and worry not, NO MGS5 SPOILERS. seriosuly...the plot of that game is so messed up and twisted, spoilers are impossible :)

I haven't played Death Stranding, and I don't really care about Kojima, but I will say this:
I object to the concept that the game "isn't trying." It's *different* than what any Triple-A company will ever put out, and that's a damned rare thing to see these days - a Triple-A game which is actually trying something *different* instead of rehashing the same old thing. That in itself deserves to be respected as at least *trying*.

oh, ik do respect it. my issue is with kojima's attitude and his fanbase. ok...a walking andf peeing simulator was a harsh term from me, sorry for that. yes, the game is different and that's good. but....a videogame has to be a game, the very term says game, as in, entertainment. if death stranding had more game and a little less "different" yeah. again, there are games with a perfect balance of gameplay and story. undertales, ni no kuni, spec ops the line, heavy rain, there can be a balance. and maybe kojima is more a frustrated moive director than a game developer. no mean to offend, but, yeah.
And Death Stranding is still a game, and offers plenty of game. Not every game entertains everyone. And balance is different for everyone. I mean, you don't think Death Stranding is a good balance, but Heavy Rain is? Not trying to bash Heavy Rain, it's the only David Cage styled game I had any investment in, but I personally wouldn't call what is effectively an interactive movie a perfect balance of gameplay and story for a game over other traditional games.
