I had very sad love story not so long ago and it led to soul-searching and reflections, and I understood a lot about myself and my characters.
The real reason Jack and Lizzy have weird tension between them but not in relationship is Jack's tendency to be on distance, disappear from time to time - often literally, since he's musician and often go on tours. He can be romantic dude, dream about him and Lizzy a lot, but at the same time he doesn't want to lose his imaginary freedom and he can't build healthy partnerships what Lizzy clearly see. It's so easy to say "I wanna be where you are" when object of your sympathy is thousands of kilometers from you.
UPD.: Forgot to add that later Jack and Lizzy will become a couple, but that was a question of Jack's personal growth.

Lol, I can't call Jack "sweetest" or at least "sweet". He always swearing, ready to fight angry bird. He has tender side, of course, but it's sure not the first thing people can see in him.

Feeling the distance get between you and those you care for is something I can relate for a lot. Whether it's me the one being distant or someone else distancing themselves, for reasons sometimes beyond our control or sometimes by our own choice.
I may still not know a whole lot about your characters and story, but this pic and its concept resonates a lot with me. Thank you for sharing it!
