A very beautiful and inspiring scene! There s much detail to the picture that its difficult to say this is a doodle. The presence of architecture and written language is a very nice addition.

The story I originally had in mind when I started drawing this was that he was trained to be a scribe but failed to get a job as one, due to reduced demand caused by introduction of printing press, and ended up making do by selling produce from his father's farm.

Similar could be said about British artisans of early 19th century, but they instead became unruly Luddites. Not only does most people resent change, but more often than not they also lack the ability to change.

This feels so much like an illustration from an actual 19th century travel book that curious romantics would've been buying up left and right. That thought alone should tell you how much this wonderful picture makes me think!
