I believe Kinsey and I must be soul-sisters. I've always drawn anthro art (as I find humans extremely difficult to draw) but I didn't really know much about furries until maybe my freshman year or so. And I never considered myself one. Yet I can't believe how many people TELL me I'm a furry just because of what I draw.
I think there's more to being a furry than just what you draw or what your interests happen to be.
And yeah. The FA I have is only to expand my audience. That and I really just like you people better than the people over on dA. ... And my furry friends told me I should get one.
There you have it.

I've had discussions with my furry friends that it's sort of like whether you're gay, bi, straight, or anything in between. It's something you're born with, something you feel, not something that people decide for you. If I had to put it into terms that other people on the internet feel, here's how I'd describe my position: I am not attracted to anthropomorphic (or regular) animals. Only human porn really gets me going. I am not disillusioned with my humanity. And while I wouldn't mind having the opportunity to wear a fursuit, I ask these people: Are the people who work for Disney, or those who play the role of Easter Bunny at the mall, any more or less furry than people who wear fursuits? It's just a costume. And I happen to like wearing costumes.
Mainly, though, I just don't identify with this fandom. There are things my furry friends are into or do that I just... don't get. X3

Sexual orientation bears a lot of similarities to furry. They both have a spectrum, they're both innately felt, and people on either end don't necessarily follow the corresponding stereotypes. But one should be careful not to confuse one with the other.
As for fursuits, ordinary people only see them as a job, or a way to appeal to children. Most people at costume parties, Halloween, and Mardi Gras don't wear fursuits; they usually wear cheap masks or dress up as celebrities. Wearing them for fun is purely a furry activity.
That being said, the only really significant part to it all is deciding whether you are a furry or not, and being comfortable with that decision.
