Saiph is teaching Sweet Pea how to roller skate! Ghost prefers flying.
These are my original characters! You can read more about them here:
Saiph (the cat)
Ghost (the bat)
Sweet Pea (the rabbit)
They are aliens living on a habitable moon orbiting a gas giant, Saolei (pronounced sow-LAY). Their home moon is called "Homerock" or just "the moon" by its residents. There are several other moons orbiting the planet, as well. The moon is tidally locked to the planet, so from one side, the gas giant is always in the sky, and from the opposite, it is never visible.
On the side facing the planet, there are daily solar eclipses which last about 1½ hours- shrouding the moon in extreme darkness. People customarily have siesta at this time.
Saolei is several times the mass of Jupiter, and Homerock is somewhat smaller than Earth. The moon has an extremely close and fast orbit, giving it a day of 30 hours. The Saoleian year lasts 389 Homerock days, which is about 486 Earth days. Every New Year, there are huge celebrations across the entire moon.
The planet Saolei is important in many Homerock religions. A common belief is that the planet is the place where souls are born, and the place they go to after death to prepare for their next reincarnation. However, these beliefs are not universal, and the planet is generally not as important to religions originating on the side of the moon where the planet is not visible.
[note: I edited the Saoleian year to be shorter than I had originally decided. It's still longer than Earth's, but I decided to scrap the idea of seasons lasting an entire Earth year.]
