I'm the type of career villain that does it just for the thrill of it. That said, I don't have much interest in collateral damage, my focus lies entirely on the heroes.
To that end I have a network of minions all throughout the land that do my bidding. A little rumor about a town razed to the ground by my armies here, a little ragged clothed stranger stumbling into town claiming they're the only survivor of my attack there, and a helpful old man in the inn handing out a quest to stop the mad fiend in the evil castle in the middle of the misty woods to top it all off - that's all it takes to hook your averageheroes out to save the world for fun and profit.
But everything has to bejust right for our battle. You can have a climactic showdown at2:45. So you hire some thugs in the woods, lay down some traps in the castle basement, organize your minions into strong, but conveniently unconnected encounters... All to delay them while you meticulously layer the folds of your cape and ensure that the lighting in your throne room will beperfect for your dark monologue when the heroes barge into the room, and that the wind will catch their handsome leader's cape just the right way when he says something about "Not belonging in this world" *swoon*.
Ahem. Yes, being a villain isn't all fun and games! Do youknow how hard it is to find gloves that fit when everyone else's hands arebackwards?! Everything has to bejust so! and there's simply no room for amateurism in the game.
