Mikumi was content in her life and role as the Emperor's final Consort. She had been trained for this from the time she could stand, and felt honor in her position. Her thoughts never needing to stray any farther than which accessory to wear, with which kimono. Until the Fall. When the Emperor's son successfully landed his coup, he ordered all of his father's previous Consorts to be killed along with him, ending a centuries-long royal tradition in the process. Mikumi lost her identity, her friends, family, and nearly her life during the uprising. She barely escaped, making her truly the last of the Emperor's Consorts.
This scene, of course, is long before this happens, and Mikumi is waiting patiently for the Emperor to make his appearance so that she may attend to him.
