In Zootopia, anyone can be anything, right? Well, we can also suppose that anyone can love anyone, too, right?
Well, this art realized for AdriCureuil proves it, i think, since it shows the love between a squirrel and... an elephant. Well, maybe i've drawn the squirrel a little bit big, or it's a small cute elephant lady, but it's not very important... What matters is the BIG love they are sharing, and how cute this couple looks ^^
I'm really sure than in a cosmopolit modern city as Zootopia, you can find all kind of interspecies couples. After all, they are all mammals, and as us, humans, they all are different. If we are able to love each other with our own differences, why these adorable characters couldn't do the same?

I've more or less ended up head-canoning it that, not only are inter-species couples common, but that at least one "pet" member of a different species is practically a staple of the modern Zootopian family.
And yes, I do believe that, in at least some cultural circles, the more unalike, the better. After all, the whole selling point of diversity in Zootopia is being stronger together; that, for everything one mammal cannot do, there is another mammal who is perfectly suited to it.
"I can lift up all the furniture just using my trunk. But when my little buddy here does the vacuuming, I never need to."
