I had just bought the Sword/Shield books a couple days ago, and when I saw your comment here, I had to look into them to confirm if that was right.
It apparently is! The Affection scale really did seem like a redundancy anyway, so it is good that they did away with it. XD

Yep. They also reduced the amount of friendship needed so it's easier to achieve and can be done with the camping and cooking stuff easily. I think it only took me two or three decent meals to get friendship up to the amount needed for evolution, which was nice since it used to be such a hassle.
