This is the last real memory, good one at least, I have of the time my ex and I were together.
I put it into a story several months ago, maybe back over the summer because of therapy reasons.
Sorta cleaning out the closet of all the unnecessary things that were stored in this head of mine.
This is the past.
It is behind me.
With this story, I forever cast these memories out of my mind, to make room for the new and the better, the bright and the shining. A step in my recovery, and a step in making space for things that actually matter.

All was silent on one cold December night. A small house set back in the woods asked for little attention, the silence surrounding it adding to its mystique. Within its walls the creaks and moans of the settling structure were all that could be heard. The largest room of the house, the living room, held several chairs, a couch, a rug, a television, not much besides the accommodations of the average home. The couch was a pull out, slightly worn from many nights of use and about as comfortable as a bed of stones.
It was there that Lola lay, unable to sleep for another consecutive night. Beside her lay her lover, a leopardess by the name of Lena who slumbered softly in her own dreams, steady breaths escaping her lips. Breath in. Breath out. Breath in. Pause. Breath out. Bright sapphire eyes blinked open for the seventh time in an hour as she listened in, her ears picking up the slightest of sounds. The dripping of the faucet in the kitchen. The buzz of the TV screen while images of the L Word flashed over it. The slightest wind outside the window, brushing tree branches against frozen glass. Earlier that morning Lola had commuted 70 miles or so to see Lena, since they rarely got the chance these days.
The Siamese turned on her side, her arm still outstretched as a pillow for the leopardess while she slept. She watched the slow rise and fall of her chest, how her spots seemed to expand and contract to her movements. She watched as Lena’s ears flick silently as she slept, dreams of untold beauty and elegance behind her closed eyes. Lola sighed, both out of frustration and tension, her own eyes closing a moment before reopening. This insomnia thing was really starting to get to her. Her mind had far too much to concentrate on these days, flitting in and out of conflict and chaos. There had been days long since passed where Lena and her were at peace, almost as if they were in a dream themselves. They laughed, loved, lived life as if it was perfection, nothing seeming to go wrong. Every little argument they had ended quickly, only to be followed by the warmth of the other’s embrace, or by the sweetest phone call from one feline to the other. It seemed they had found what everyone chased for, what those who sought it wanted with every fiber of their being: perfection. Their days were filled with smiles, with laughs of the most loving pitch, between two star crossed lovers who could do nothing but ask for the happiness of their other. Though as the months began to pass, a shadow had befallen them.
The arguments could no longer be cured with a loving phone call, or even by a sweet embrace. Xe had been whispering once more, her sickening words filling Lola’s head with worry, doubt, grief, and oh so much more. Lena had been known to sleep around, the past few months being filled with confessions of unfaithfulness and anger. Lola’s brow furrowed in the darkness, her brain picking up where her tired thoughts had left off only an hour previous. She shook her head, trying to find a bit of peace as she gazed over Lena’s still form. Almost on cue, the girl turned in her sleep, nuzzling closer to Lola’s chest as a purr echoed from in her throat. Her bushy tail wound its way around the Siamese’s side, pulling her even closer as the leopardess settled once more. Lola laid completely still, a bit surprised by the gesture though not wanting to ruin it. Besides, the girl was practically in a coma. She probably had no idea what she was doing, or so Lola thought at the time. She half smiled, running her hand soothingly through the other female’s vibrant red hair.
That was another trait the Siamese admired about the leopardess, her ever changing hair. One moment it was black, the next red, the next so blond it was almost white. She loved to run her paws through it, the strands tangling in her fingertips. It entertained her to no end, even as she did it then. Lola pulled back a little, removing the girl’s arms from around her and sliding out of the bed a moment, her spine popping in various places. She yawned and stretched, her fur going stiff before flattening back to its normal state. She walked a few steps through a sliding door, only appearing a few moments later to the sound of water flowing through drainpipes, the flush of a toilet the only other noise uttered within the structure’s walls. The Siamese headed for the couch, but stopped dead in her tracks as something caught her eye. Had it been her imagination? No, there it was again. Outside the closed curtained there was movement, small, but still movement. She inched closer to a large three panel window, drawing back the curtains a moment as she let out a soft gasp.
White. There was so much white. A thin layer had fallen to cover everything it touched, from the trees to the millions of cracks in the driveway. Tiny flakes fell from the sky, small specks of purity on the blackened atmosphere. Snow was something she could never get enough of, could never describe its beauty in words. At times, she felt the same about Lena. As she stood silently by the window, a shadow crept up behind her, warm and comforting arms wrapping their way around her waist as wandering chin met her shoulder. Lena purred in her contentment, silently nuzzling into Lola’s neck. The Siamese was more than surprised, her heart stopping a moment as her breath caught in her throat. Her paws moved over Lena’s, gently stroking her thumb across the smooth fur that covered her fingers. Their eyes met briefly in a glance, the sapphire and hazel colorations mixing together as the embrace tightened. Together they stood, their love renewed for just one night, watching the endless snowfall beyond the frosted glass… though their peace was only an illusion. The hands of time were ticking as their doomsday rapidly approached.
