I have to say, when I began this experiment, I wasn't expecting this kinda result.
I suppose, I should explain what this experiment was, in the first place.
Well, the idea was simple; Could we create "better humans" by combining various types of Animal DNA with our own?
Sounds pretty Science Fiction, right? And by all accounts, most people thought it would remain that way.
But I thought different.
It took me a several of years, but I managed to figure out all the basic steps. But it wouldn't be easy and it would take resources that I didn't have.
Luckily, I found backers; Rich ones, who liked the idea of Animal-People. They funded me completely and my work began.
The first few years were bogged with failure.
I had begun by splicing Human and Ape DNA; This was on account of the fact that Humans and Apes are not to distant on the evolutionary scale, per se.
But the result wasn't anything special. It just looked like a regular human. Nothing different or improved or even reduced. It was just human.
I theorized that it was possible that Humans and Apes were too close for the result to be noticeable. My backers weren't happy, but they accepted the reasoning and insisted I take more drastic steps.
I moved onto other mammalian life-forms; Cats, Dogs, Rabbits and the like. Like before they were failures but in a different regard; They just didn't meld together.
I couldn't really understand it; I assumed that the connection between mammals would've worked, but it clearly didn't. I must have wasted four whole years on Mammals. My backers were not impressed.
Then I moved onto reptiles; I started with a common house lizard. I was honestly grasping for straws and I couldn't believe when it actually worked.
The DNA's mixed, and the little hybrid grew and was born.
My work was proven; I could in fact, make a "different human"; She was everything I wanted and more; Her body was covered in those thin scales that lizards have. She had a small tail and claws. She grew rapidly; Within a few years, she had the body of a full-grown adult woman. I noticed various oddities on her; She had breasts, but no nipples. I wondered what the purpose of her breasts was, if she couldn't feel her kids. She only grew hair on her head, and she she seemed to have a limited ability to regulate her body temperature; She would require external heat when the external temperature fell, and vice-versa, but in normal conditions, she didn't seem to require anything of the sort.
I was ecstatic when she was born; My backers were only partially so.
I assume they didn't see a "Lizard Hybrid" as the end-result, so much as just a stepping stone; Proof that their investment was not being wasted.
They wanted me to figure out mammals; They wanted me to use other animals that had a greater use for them and their purposes. I wanted to focus more on my one success, but I had listen to them if I wanted to keep my funding.
So, I continued my work; Splicing and mixing, while taking care of my lizard on the side. I couldn't devote as much time to her as I would've liked, but I was able to care for her decently enough.
And I think she warmed up to me quite nicely.
My work was bogged with failures; Mammals never worked. Reptiles only occasionally; If they did, it was generally with a more undesirable reptile, like a turtle. My backers insisted I terminate these successes before they gestated into grown living beings. It hurt; It was like I was killing my children...
Amphibians were much like reptiles; Semi-successful. I never got around to working with avaians or aquatic life. They terminated my funding by that point.
I couldn't give them what they wanted, and so they told me to clear out my research. I was worried that they would've tried to claim it, but they didn't seem interested in it at this point; My research was mine, as was my lizard. But it felt like it was all over for me.
I remember being distinctly depressed that day; I remember drinking a lot. I remember talking to my little Lizard and I can't remember anything beyond that.
What I do remember was waking up in front of her pen, with a terrible hangover. I felt bloody awful, and that was before I turned towards her pen and saw her staring at me.
She looked different; It took me a couple of seconds to register the fact that she had a big round gravid belly.
She was pregnant... And I had no idea how or why.
I suspect that I must have done something; And her expression implied that she wasn't in pain. I couldn't understand it. How had she grown so fast? How did any of this work?
I realized that my work wasn't over; Even with just the one successful experiment, I had a whole world of studying to do. Me and my Big, Cute Lizard...
***
So, this was an idea that I had a long time back, but I forgot about it until recently; And I decided to just sketch it out quickly.
And I think it turned out pretty well!
The POV stuff is pretty fun and this lizard looks pretty cute!
Lemme know what you think!
Until the Next!
