The Black Hole was meant to be an homage to the old sci-fi pictures from the 1950s, and what says Old School American sci-fi more than a huge, silent, menacing robot with a glowing, pulsating visor?

Maximillian Shell, yes I know - I always wondered why they named it after this actor...
Talking about homages, I've seen Event Horizon lately and the comparison is fascinating with this film. I already knew that the USS Cygnus and the Event Horizon are the only two "gothic" ships ever to have appeared on big screen, not to mention the presence of a black hole (just its size and place are different), but I was absolutely fascinated by the scene where they were looking for life inside the ship in E.H, absolutely identical to the one in the B.H !!!!! When you add the search/discovery of a lost and ghost spaceship, and the reach for something like Hell through the black hole tunnel, Event Horizon IS a tribute to The Black Hole, without any question.

Yes, definitly a good design. it was very solid looking.
Now? Our only robots are arms that weld cars, giant presses that print computer chips. and round things the size of a cereal boc that vacuume carpets. :(

Depends on which ones you are talking about, these you take example are purely utilitary ones - no need for legs and head for a robot that will stay in the same place doing the same thing for years...-, but many others exist...

Le bon vieux Maximilian... Qui finit en Enfer, fusionné avec son maître !
Une vision surréaliste et flippante, assez décalée dans ce film qui restait - globalement - assez cucul-la-praline...

Film résolument culte pour moi, autant dans ses FANTASTIQUES visuels que dans ses jeux d'acteur absolument... Indescriptibles parfois, en effet. La version français est à ce sujet bien supérieure à la version originale pour une fois, avec un Dr Reinhardt à l'accent allemant totalement surjoué et de magnifiques répliques (cu)cultes !!!

Mouais, m'enfin, les scènes impliquant les robots, généralement... Pardon ! A part les scènes avec Maximilian, je me souviens que c'était gentiment niais.
M'enfin, oui, ça vaut le coup de le voir et de le revoir... C'est un spectacle daté, et propre à inspirer la nostalgie pour une certaine époque.

Ah, la relation virile entre BOB et Vincent était en effet... oubliable.

Ah ! Le gag du " vieux-sur-le-retour " plein de sagesse, face au " jeune freluquet " innocent mais plein de fougue... Traduit en version robotique asimovienne !
Mon Dieu ! C'était tellement consternant ! ^^

C'est marrant, mais je me suis TOUJOURS dit que des robots communiquant "oralement" était complètement idiot, puisque les ondes radio sont tellement plus efficaces en portée et en débit !!! Parallèlement, c'est vrai que réussir à faire comprendre ce que deux robots peuvent se dire par les ondes est un vrai tour de force...

Was the same when I was younger but I changed my mind since then... Yet, the concept (a hovering R2D2) was quite nice and its design didn't age.

Ffiiiuuuuu!!!! this wonderful picture remind My chilhood great Movie the black Hole and Maximiliam always was my favorite Robot, What a robot! was incredible He are the Only in all the Ship what the Lasers don't make Damage :3
