Shades of Life Extra Scenes - Fathers & Sons Part 1
"ANOTHER pack of them?" the Yoshi merchant exclaimed, but with more concern than the delight at another sale.
"Yes, well, he...we...have been working hard lately so..." Cid replied, digging into a pouch of coins, trying to remember how much these "extra absorbent" variants were.
"Sounds more like a pet than a...whatever it was you said he was," the merchant waved off amusingly as he brought up a pack of the green-polka-dot garments.
Cid stopped rummaging around in the pouch, his face looking away from the other Yoshi while he had been doing so. What exactly WAS he...? He wasn't so sure how to define it at this juncture. It had been several months, to be sure, but he still couldn't pin it down. He had just been going through the helpful motions all this time, and just skewed the definets on WHY he was doing them.
"But, like I can complain. You're helping me make a bundle here Cid!" the merchant continued, switching gears a little. "You're usually at the scrap shop or something. Didn't expect you to buying diapers of all things heh heh."
"Me neither," Cid grunted, thankful for the slight change of topic as he brought up the coins to pay. The merchant accepted the payment, passing the pack to Cid's waiting hands.
"Cheryl told me you got some language books. You teaching that Koopa to READ?"
Cid rolled his eyes, thankfully hidden behind the package of diapers. "He's young, but learning. He's doing better every day," he replied. "I think," his inward mind commented alone.
"Wow...roof over the head, diapering, learning words...quite the project eh Cid?"
Cid was already starting to move away, but stopped at that comment, even though the merchant had turned to other business of his own.
Project...? Was that what this Koopa he found was? Another one of his activities, like the windmill or the ziplines, to occupy his foggy mind with?
Cid seriously thought on it for a moment, standing there, looking at the ground. Oops. Not the ground, he was holding the package of extra-absorbent Yoshi diapers in front, so he was unintentionally looking at the designs on the front, displaying one of the garments.
After a few seconds, Cid smiled. In his mind the sight of the things reminded him of the Koopa. How he'd waddle around the house and Cid would have to chase him down to get a fresh one on him. It was work, to be sure...but for some reason...there was something more fulfilling about this.
Thinking on that, Cid realized this wasn't like a project. It wasn't something he just did iin a completely autonomous way. There was in care in there, even if it was on his end. Maybe, unlike the other things, if the Koopa ever reciprocated the effort then...
Cid shook his head, starting to make his way home. No. This wasn't some project he'd finish and be done with like the others. So far, that was good enough...
