I am fairly certain they got scared of confronting the church. In the first book it might be a bit blurry, but in the later books it gets obvious that the Magistrate is essentially the catholic church. Also, they quite literally kill god in the third book, so I guess you can see how that probably would have been hard to sell, especially in America. XD
