Ah ya, camera and lighting can be tricky. Scenery contrasts also play part. Ya just gotta experiment. Generally I like to setup several cameras, and fiddle with the settings of them to change the overall lighting appearance, and use specific lights to brighten up the scene, as I find some scenes just too damn bright and unnatural feeling.
I try to avoid open outdoor scenes with not much going on, as it does not create interesting lighting visuals in the background or contrasts (scenes with objects for creating shadows really help setup an atmopshere).
I'm still new at SFM, but not new to messing around with lighting (DaVinci Fusion has been primarily where I learned a lot on lighting and special FX)
If anything though, just play around and find what you like and don't like. SFM is an amazing for what it is *^^*
