Melody and Obsidian are Canterlot elite. they have Thoughts and Expectations as to the Proper Way To Do Things. or, mostly Obsidian does. Melody is a bit more laid back than her husband. there was very little love involved in their marriage. it was simply Expected Of Them - also why they had Eclipse.
Melody, in her younger days, was an opera singer. she still has a fondness for singing and music in general, but has settled into her role of society wife well.
Obsidian is a lifetime Rich Boy, the annoying country clubs and yachts type. he's the owner and operator of the family precious gem mine.

Eclipse's relationship with his father is incredibly strained. Obsidian never understood his son's ambition to better himself with magic (or just like, in general) and believes this time studying at Celestia's School is Just A Phase and is barely humoring Eclipse while he sorts through it.
Melody is pretty clueless to their arguments and it just happy to spend time together as a family.

notes: as an adult, Eclipse is the exact same height as his father. Melody is a few inches shorter than the both of them.
in strict show-style, Obsidian uses a Braeburn-type model. Eclipse uses a middling model similar to Zecora. Melody uses a standard female model.
