You may have noticed that this page is coming in rather late in the month! This is because the experimental production-line method I tried last month was a fantastic success, and I’ve been using most of this month cranking out sketches and inks to establish a buffer (finally).
This will help ensure there are far fewer inconsistencies in the post schedule, and maybe even allow for a steady posting on a scheduled day of the week soon, so here’s hoping!

Hey you! Yes, you! Don't want a knife in your back?
Then just pretend that if a hypothetical Yinglet were to stab a hypothetical Ivenmoth guard, you would not be interested in the matter and you would definately not have witnessed any such acts.
I'm glad that we are on the same page here. Thanks for your service and good day :D

Seeing Viracroix speak with different people about the same matter really helps to illustrate just how easily he pivots from one coercion strategy to another -- it just makes it that much more difficult to gauge what's actually going through his mind, even though it's a fair bet that he can read you like a book at the exact same time. Little wonder that so many of his subordinates are afraid of him.

The panels progressively get brighter both figuratively and literally. The first panel has a dark shading and is awfully similar to the part of the series where we saw the Trademaster murder someone (especially with the cameo of the expressionless girl). The Trademaster's dialogue in this panel is ominous to say the least; his mention of tying up loose ends reminded me of Shepherd's last words to Ghost and Roach before shooting them in Modern Warfare 2, "Good, that's one less loose end." The Trademaster remarking "Let's be done with this" suggests that what he intends to do is unpleasant to him. I thought that he would straight up clean house and leave no witnesses alive. Then... the following panels are progressively less serious and the dark tone dissipates like dissolving mist with the Trademaster offering candy to orphans in the last panel (which is far morally opposite to murdering them). It seems like you're experimenting with the tools that are available to you and your artistic choices are stunningly effective; not only did you subvert expectation but you did it without being on the nose. I can tell you're really having fun with this comic, it's brilliant.
Extrapolating from Field Guide 5 Val Salia should probably have population of less than 2000 (and that is probably an overestimation). And that is entire city - House of Salia itself does not employ everyone.
So no, realistically they do not have ninjas trained from childhood; both secret policing and assassinations would be done either by the most trustworthy among the normal guards, or by importing specialists from elsewhere.
Now, the House is reasonably wealthy and can afford to feed a couple (or a half-a-dozen) of children if Ran would get some bright idea, but it is not normal modus operandi for an outfit of this size.

Towns tend to be 1-8K, with cities 8-12K (cities tend to be where the Universities are). Big Cities are 12-100K. So Val Salia might be a few thousand?

I've been racking my brain about Viracroix and how he interacts with his subjects. He kills a guy for trading a portion of surplus grains. He swears secrecy among nine individuals. For some, he simply asks; for others, he bribes. Is nine bodies too many? "...only bloodthirsty as required," he said. For here, it's not required, but doesn't that mean he's still bloodthirsty? Did he have to kill Omarhan? Debatable, but it feels as if if any of the witnesses step out of line, it'll be game over for them and it looks like at least one guy knows that.
I just find it to be an interestingly odd relationship. Do the Ivenmoth personnel cooperate out of shared interests or fear?

My impression is that Viracroix is nothing if not efficient. So it doesn't really matter whether he is bloodthirsty or mellow deep inside - he shows bloodthirstiness when it's good for his ends, and doesn't when it's not (and while it's unlikely that he had to kill Omharan, given what we have seen of Val Salian politics it's likely it was the best (for Vracroix) course of action).
Regarding the Ivenmoth personnel - it's likely to be both. Note however that if Viracroix would kill someone for stepping out of line it's likely that at least other Houses in that region (and maybe even other countries) would do so too. Viracroix does not seem to be doing what others find unthinkable - instead he's doing what everyone else is doing, only better.
