She's a Quarian. They are organic and have weak immune systems. Due to them losing there planet and being forced to live in a giant fleet of star ships called the flotilla for so many years there already weak immune systems have gotten even weaker due to the sterile environment of the space ships. They live there lives inside these protective clean suits that make them look like there robots or something.
while you done HAVE to play the first i would recomend it if only to do the main story. It doesnt take that long to complete in you plow through it and dont much around with that side quest stuff. especially if you dont plan on importing your save from me1 to me2. But if you do the things you do in the first have some impact on how the story is told in the second and presumable a bigger effect on the third...whenever that may be.
