Wings should connect all the way down to the hips, if you want realistic anatomical reason why he flies in a horizontal position and not a vertical one.
I can't find the page now, but it was a good for showing why (basically, with a shoulder-only wing the butt doesn't have support during flight).
But hey. Its not that important.
