Due to Louis XIV's association with Apollo, the garden contains a number of fountains related to the god. This fountain shows a scene from the god's childhood. To flee the wrath of Jupiter's wife Juno, Latona--Diana and Apollo's mother--sought shelter in a foreign land, where they were cruelly tormented by the local peasants. Desperate, she begged the father of her children for protection; in response, Jupiter transformed the insolent farmers into toads and lizards.
