Now for a bit of a change---here's a pic of me and a friend at FC. This was inspired by Shade99, who posted a pic of me holding his lizard. ^^
Err--correction--the inspiring photo was by Gallonigher--sorry about that. Shade99 has an evil twin, Shade66; he made me do it wrong......

Sue also does science fiction conventions.
One of the things that we learn as pros is "have something about you that stands out so that someone who bought a piece of art from you can identify you easily if they want to talk to you elsewhere." Sue's red jacket is a "trademark". If she wore blue jeans and tee shirt (a sad habit I've gotten into), you couldn't tell her from anyone else.
So, the "costume" makes us identifiable and therefore more approachable and memorable.

alas, conbadges can be small, barely readable, and tend to turn face-down, so people would have to fondle with them (i.e. pick at a stranger's shirt front in order to identify them).
being easily recognizable from a distance is always better, especially in crowds of hundreds at large furry cons.
hell, you can get lost in the crowd at small european conventions as well. a badge doesn't do you any good there, either.
