Regina spent five years in jail for a crime for which she was falsely convicted, and unknowingly signed divorce papers during her sentence that gave her husband custody of both her children. After serving her time, she felt she had no reason to carry on in life, but recovered from that feeling and got an evening job at a chemical processing plant.

One night, she slipped on a spot on the floor that the janitors had missed, and fell into a reactor. She survived, but couldn't move when she woke up at the hospital. She was thinking of getting compensation, but her boss, after figuring she would do so, paid the doctor whose care she was under to pull the plug on her life-support system and covered up any involvement.

At the morgue, those who cut her open to remove her organs saw those organs glowing brightly, and Regina quickly got up and attacked, shooting laser beams from her fists. These beams had incredibly powerful impact, and she had good aim with them. The police pursued her for assaulting them, but Lightning-K, somehow having seen the opportunity and set his sights on leading her in the right direction, intervened and took her to his base. He had already recruited others with special abilities who had also learned of her having such powers. She joined their team because she had better chances of surviving here than in running from the law again.
