This is a shelter I made in the woods for a bit of fun. It's right next to the spot I usually go to for processing the wood I use for my fuel and wood carving related needs.
It's still a bit of a work in progress, but overall it's about complete. In front of the shelter is a heat reflector that would be used to keep some of the heat in if I had a fire in between.
The materials I used to make this shelter consist of a variety of woods that I have harvested, some that are freshly felled maple saplings that I used for most of the skeleton of this structure. The roof is made of mostly dead sassafras branches and the actual roofing is made of very large plates of sassafras bark that I basically removed from dead sassafras trees. The plates came off very easily.
The walls are made of maple branches and the walling is made from sheets of birch bark that I harvested from dead birch logs lying on the ground. The floor mat is a very large sheet of birch bark that I considered to be my prized piece, due to the fact it peeled off a dead trunk with great ease.
This was really fun to make and it keeps the snow off of me, but I will need to insulate the floor of the shelter, so my rear doesn't freeze.

Okay. I have pile more stuff on top of the roof. I have found a large pile of these evergreen hedge tops near the entrance of the forest area. People in the community actually just leave piles of tree bits they've cut up there. I've even used some of the evergreen "leaves" and branches for insulation of the floor.
That's good, make sure to build up the walls and make sure they're insulated too, also so that the rainwater from the roofing won't leak into the house.
Also, floor insulation may not be enough, even with a lot of material built up from the ground, the earth will still get extremely cold and shoot right through that stuff. Your best bet would be to make a raised platform if you're going to try and sleep there.
